Control frameworks and compliance: Bridging the gap to risk management.

Oversight of the internal control environment is a critical component for compliance professionals. What gives them – and their board, executive and regulators – comfort that those controls are helping the organisation achieve objectives safely and consistently? To achieve a level of comfort, many turn to control frameworks which outline common practices to implement those controls. In some cases, alignment with those frameworks becomes a de facto requirement.

Ineffective implementation of control frameworks can miss the forest for the trees. Implemented controls can become a burden and 'something we have to do', rather than linking to business objectives. At their worst, they become a tangled mess of documentation and provide a false sense of security until something goes wrong. Meanwhile, compliance professionals struggle to identify critical information when they need it to gain assurance or highlight red flags.
